Chips Cottage

Cheshire Village, Black Mountain, NC
3400 total square feet

*April 2008 Home of the Month
Raleigh News and Observer

The owner and developer of this speculative project wanted a home inspired by Gustav Stickley, who introduced America to the European Arts and Crafts movement with his 1901 pamphlet, ‘Chips from the Workshop.’

Together, we created a multi-generational family of clients and then designed a house for them. The design includes a main floor master suite, an upper floor children’s room and playroom, and an accessible lower floor in-law suite and media room. This cottage uses local materials and natural light. It also includes typical Arts and Crafts built-in cabinetry, benches, and hidden features. There is ample storage and closet space. Outside, natural stone, stucco, and siding combine to create a low-maintenance façade.

* This cottage earned the April 2008 ‘Home of the Month Award,’ featured in the Raleigh News and Observer. This award is a collaborative effort between the newspaper and NC State University’s School of Design, through its home environments design initiative. The selections bring attention to the value of good design in housing. The home was praised for its natural light and excellent siting. Download the full article here (pdf)
