CHIPS COTTAGE
Cheshire Village, Black Mountain, NC
3400 total square feet
The owner and developer of this speculative project asked the firm to create a house inspired by Gustav Stickley, the author, designer and furniture maker who introduced America to the European Arts and Crafts movement with his 1901 pamphlet, 'Chips from the Workshop.' We worked with the owner to create a multi-generational family of clients, and then to design a house for that family.
The design includes a main floor master suite, an upper floor kids' room and playroom, and an accessible lower floor in-law suite and media room. This cottage uses local materials, maximizes natural light and includes built-in cabinetry, benches, and hidden features as was typical in period Arts and Crafts homes, combined with ample storage and closet space and a plan designed for modern living.
